In Tamil Nadu, the ninth anniversary of tsunami calamity is being observed today. Tsunami which hit on December 26, 2004 devastated Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu in which more than 6,682 persons died.

Our correspondent reports that Nagappatinam bore the brunt of the devastating tsunami which hit nine years ago on this day. It was a moving sight when people came silently to pay homage to the departed souls of their dear and near ones. The tsunami had left a trail of destruction and death leaving an indelible mark of sorrow and pain in the hearts of survivors. Many of them still fear the fury of sea and images of children swallowed by huge waves haunt them.Local people led by Fisheries Minister Jayapal will pay homage at the Tsunami memorial in Nagapattinam. In Tamil Nadu more than Rs 5,280 crore was spent for tsunami rehabilitation which included the central government assistance of Rs 2,347 crore and other external aid.
