  • Travel becoming eco-friendly, reveals TripAdvisor

    Published on April 18, 2013

The world’s largest accommodation and traveller survey – TripBarometer by TripAdvisor, has found Indian accommodation owners as well as travellers to be among the most conscientious on the importance of being environment friendly. The comprehensive biannual study, conducted on behalf of TripAdvisor by independent research firm StrategyOne (a division of Edelman Berland), covers top travel and hospitality industry trends according to more than 35,000 travellers and accommodations from around the world.

As many as 91% of Indian travellers said they believed it was important that accommodations providers have eco-friendly practices in place to reduce the impact their business has on the environment. This is way above the average response for Asia which stood at 71% and the average global sample response of 79%.

India, along with Indonesia and Canada, ranked highest among all countries for thinking it’s important for businesses to have eco-friendly practices. However, while Indian accommodations are ahead in giving the thumbs up to the environment, they seem to be slightly behind in practice. The TripBarometer reveals 70% of Indian accommodation owners are implementing eco-friendly practices compared to the Asia average of 73% and the global average of 77%. The top 3 green initiatives adopted by Indian accommodations are – use of energy-efficient bulbs (89 per cent), a towel-and-linen-re-use programme (83 per cent) and use of eco-friendly cleaning products (62 per cent).
