Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal files his nomination for Rajya Sabha seat. It is almost certain to be elected unopposed

Guwahati : Elections to 6 Rajya Sabha seats from across the country are scheduled for October 4| Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal filed his nomination papers from The Rajya Sabha seat in Assam on Tuesday and is almost certain to be elected unopposed. Because the Opposition has decided not to field any candidate against him. Union Minister and former Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is the unanimous candidate of the ruling coalition of the state with BJP, AGP and UPPL.

He was accompanied by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, AGP leader and Agriculture Minister Atul Bora, UPPL leader and handloom and textiles minister U G Brahma, Bodoland regional region chief Pramod Bodo, BJP state president Bhabesh Kalita and cabinet ministers and several other BJP leaders.The Rajya Sabha seat fell vacant after Biswajit Daimari resigned from the Upper House after he was elected to the Assam Assembly. He is currently the Speaker of the State Assembly. Sonowal was elected to the assembly from Majuli for the second time in a row in May this year. The 59-year-old BJP leader was inducted into Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s cabinet in July. The last date for filing nominations for the Rajya Sabha elections is September 22, while the papers will be examined on September 23 and the results will be declared on October 4. Sonowal’s victory seems certain as opposition parties have decided not to field their candidates. Sonowal thanked the people of Assam for giving them an opportunity to serve and sought blessings of all. He also thanked the Prime Minister and the people of Majuli.
