UNSC to hold emergency meeting to discuss Congo mass rape

    Published on August 26, 2010

Diplomats at the United Nations say the Security Council is to hold an emergency meeting to discuss rape of more than 150 women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, nearly 30 kilometres from the U.N. base. Peace keeping troops said they heard about the mass rape carried out by rebel forces ten days after it happened. The top UN official in Congo told journalists that peace keepers have received general information about the rebels setting up a road block but no suggestion of attack. Speaking by video link, he said UN patrols have twice passed through the main village where mass rapes took place but no one told them any thing, speculating they may have feared rebel reprisals or felt shame because of the culture of stigma of rape.
