  • A persistent rainstorm forced postponement of the US Open men’s final between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic until Monday, marking the third straight year the season’s final Grand Slam tournament will finish a day late.

Rain began falling about two hours before Nadal and Djokovic were scheduled to start on Sunday and it hadn’t stopped when tournament officials decided to call it a night.

Djokovic could use the extra rest. He made it to the final with a gruelling five-set win over Roger Federer on Saturday. Nadal won his match in straight sets.

This marks the first three-year string of delayed finishes since the men’s and women’s singles competitions were combined and played at the same site in 1935.
