US President Donald Trump has said that Iran appears to be standing down after it fired missiles at air bases housing US forces in Iraq adding that it is a good thing for all parties concerned. In a televised address from the White House yesterday, Trump said, no US or Iraqi lives were lost in the attacks and the bases suffered only minimal damage.

Trump said US is ready to embrace peace with all who seek it. He said US wants a great future for the people and leaders of Iran, one of prosperity at home, and harmony with the nations of the world.

But he said the US would immediately impose additional financial and economic sanctions on Iran, which would remain until it changed its behaviour. He said Iran must abandon its nuclear ambitions and end its support for terrorism.

Iran had fired missiles at Irbil and Al Asad US bases in Iraq early morning yesterday.

Trump had previously threatened military action against Iran if it were to target US personnel and bases, but he did not announce any military action. He also said that, the fact that America has the great military and equipment does not mean it has to use it.

On the other hand, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei described the missile attacks as merely a slap, but said that the U.S. must leave the region.

Iran has claimed that 80 US army personnel have been killed and about 200 injured in missile attacks launched by Iranian Revolutionary Guards. Iran said it acted in retaliation after the assassination of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani last week.

Meanwhile, last evening at least two rockets fell in Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone, where the US embassy is located. However, there were no reports of any damage or casualties.
