  • Villagers stage protest against extraction of stone from Diyung River

    Haflong   : In protest against extraction of stone from Diyung River and raise awareness to save Rivers,

    Villagers of several villages like Boro-Waphu, Kelolo, Pura, Longma,Borohaflong, N.Leikul, longma II staged sit in protest below the Dayang Railway bridge from 11 am to 4 Pm on Friday.

    Villagers were demanding immediate halt on extraction of stones from the Diyung River since ongoing stone extraction works at Diyung River has become a major threat to their locality also disturbed our ecosystems resulting in endangering the aquatic lives in it.

    Later they submitted a memorandum to Shri  Amitabh Rajkhowa, ACS, Principal Secretary, North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council requesting him to stop the ongoing stone extraction work at Diyung River.


    They stated that the ongoing stone extraction works at Diyung River has become a major threat to their own locality in relation to drinking water and for domestic consumption.

    Besides, it has also disturbed the ecosystems resulting in endangering the aquatic lives in it, moreover it was also clear and important to remark that if this extraction work was still carried on, sooner or later the scenic beauty of the land would be vanished and even many of the families of Dima Hasao residing in the Haflong town area and the outskirts depending on drinking water supply from this particular river would face a major problem.

    Therefore they requested him to take up the necessary action in stopping the stone extraction work at Diyung River as early as possible for the needs.
