Mumbai – A 50-year-old construction worker who suffered a life-threatening head injury after falling from a height of nearly 15 to 20 feet has made a remarkable recovery at Apex Hospitals, Borivali, highlighting the importance of timely intervention, close monitoring, and expert clinical judgment. Following the fall at a construction site, the patient was rushed to a local hospital where a CT scan of the head revealed an extradural hematoma, a serious condition caused by the accumulation of blood between the skull and the dura, the protective covering of the brain. Due to the severity of the injury, he was referred to Apex Hospitals, Borivali, for advanced neurosurgical care.
At the time of admission, the patient was in a critical state. He was drowsy, barely able to move his limbs, had a feeble voice, and could only faintly open his eyes. He also had a deep bone-level gash measuring approximately 7 to 8 cm over the frontal region of the skull, which had been sutured earlier. In many such cases, emergency surgery is required to remove a portion of the skull and evacuate the blood clot to prevent rising pressure within the brain. However, after careful evaluation, the neurosurgical team led by Dr. Vivek Patel, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apex Hospitals, Borivali, opted for a conservative, non-surgical approach. The patient was placed under strict observation in the Intensive Care Unit under the supervision of the ICU team led by Dr. Deepak Gupta.
Serial CT scans were conducted to closely monitor the size of the clot and intracranial pressure. There was no increase in the hematoma, and the patient showed steady neurological improvement.Speaking about the case, Dr. Vivek Patel said, “Not every extradural hematoma requires immediate surgery. With careful patient selection, close ICU monitoring, and timely imaging, some patients can be safely managed without surgery. In this case, the patient responded well to conservative treatment, which helped avoid an unnecessary operation.”
After three days in the ICU, the patient was shifted to the ward. He became fully conscious and oriented, his speech improved, and he regained full movement of all four limbs. By the fifth day, with the support of the physiotherapy team, he was mobilized out of bed and started walking. He was later discharged in stable condition.
This case stands as a strong example of coordinated teamwork and expert decision-making at Apex Hospitals, Borivali, leading to a successful outcome in a severe head injury.
