Mumbai: Renowned author and social activist Smita Parikh was conferred with the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Bharat Puraskar on Friday in recognition of her contributions to literature and her commitment to social causes. Parikh, founder of Lit O Fest Mumbai, has long been a vocal advocate for justice and cultural engagement.
An accomplished writer from a young age, she received the Rajasthan Sahitya Academy Award at 15 and has published the poetry collection “Main Panth Niharu.” Reflecting on the honour, Parikh said, “It’s such an honour to be felicitated with an award by his legacy. I never got a chance to meet him personally, so this award really means a lot to me. I would definitely like to help his foundation take his legacy forward.”
The 5th edition of the Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Bharat Puraskar was led by educationist Sonia Mayers, in association with APJMJ Salim Sheikh, grandson of the late President and representative of the House of Kalam. The award celebrates individuals contributing meaningfully to nation-building and public service.
“I have extended this beautiful journey along with the family of APJ Kalam Sahab,” said Sonia Mayers, “and that’s why I have this beautiful extended family of the dignified awardees today. I hope to take it global someday.”
“This award carries the spirit of my grandfather, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam — the People’s President of India,” added Salim Sheikh, expressing pride in the legacy continuing to inspire changemakers.
A symbolic highlight of the ceremony was the Indian Army band’s rendition of the National Anthem, marking the first time the award was honoured with such a tribute — underlining Dr. Kalam’s legacy of patriotism and service.
In addition to Smita Parikh, legendary filmmaker Ramesh Sippy and veteran playback singer Udit Narayan were honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Several other distinguished individuals were also recognised for their impact across various fields, including percussion maestro Taufiq Qureshi, senior IRS officer Sameer Wankhede, journalist Manish Awasthi, and Kargil war hero Colonel Lalit Rai.
Col. Lalit Rai, a Veer Chakra awardee, paid tribute to the late President, saying: “As a fauji, I salute Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam for his inspiring journey. I am privileged to be here. There are very few people in life whom I hold in such high esteem, and Dr. Kalam is one of the top personalities.”
