The Science and Technology Ministry has launched Stereo Digital Aerial Photography which will help in Coastal Hazard Line Mapping. It will provide data for better management of the country’s coastal zone. An official press release says the mainland coastline has been divided into eight blocks for the purpose of digital aerial photography. The data of these areas including flood lines and sea level rise impacts over the last 40 years will be collected. According to these data, a prediction of erosions to take place over next 100 years will be assessed.
The survey is being undertaken with the help of the World Bank and the project will cost around 125 crores rupees.
The Ministry has also released the Shoreline Change Atlas of Orissa recently. The Atlas contains precise interpretation of shoreline change of the State. The Institute of Ocean Management, Anna University, Chennai had prepared the map. Our correspondent reports, the information will be extremely useful in providing an overview of areas that are likely to be more vulnerable toto coastal erosion and to safeguard coastal population from highly eroding and hazard areas.
