Kochi : Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly successfully treated a critical case of a 65-year-old woman with a thyroid gland growing inside her chest, obstructing her breathing. The patient was confronted with a rare condition of what is known as retrosternal goitre.
Retrosternal goitre is a condition in which the thyroid gland grows into the chest area behind the breastbone, complicating surgical procedures. However, the medical team at Apollo Adlux Hospital, employing precision and advanced techniques, guaranteed a safe and successful procedure.
The endocrine surgery consultant Dr. Ferdinant J, effectively addressed the condition employing precision and advanced techniques. “Treating this rare and complex condition requires a high level of skill and expertise,” stated Dr. J. Ferdinant.
Surgery was performed after detailed preoperative evaluations and extensive imaging as the thyroid had grown close to the trachea and oesophagus. Instead of sternotomy (an incision made into the heart or nearby organs or blood vessels), the advanced minimally invasive method was used, resulting in shorter hospital stays without any major incisions in the patient.
Preceding the discharge, the patient experienced swift improvement, including easier breathing and feeling better overall.
Dr. Ferdinant highlighted that this innovative treatment method instils hope for individuals struggling with the same condition. He added that this achievement in endocrine surgery is a matter of pride for Apollo Adlux Hospital and the entire staff, who are always committed to patient care.
