  • ‘Vama’: Showcasing the Women Artists of Delhi

    New Delhi: Marking a twin celebration of womanhood and art, an all-women exhibition of contemporary art showcasing both veteran and budding artists of Delhi was thrown open today by the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Delhi Government’s Cultural Wing.

    From established to promising, 51 contemporary women artists from Delhi will be showcasing their works, including paintings, drawings, prints and installation, in the eight-day Women’s Art Exhibition.

    The exhibition & artist camp at Twin Art Gallery and Mati Ghar Lawns, IGNCA was inaugurated this evening and will be open for public viewing from 21 March to 28 March, daily at 10:30 AM to 7:00 PM.

    Veteran artists like Arpana Caur, Anupam Sud, Gogi Saroj Pal, and Shobha Broota are among the names whose works are featuring at the exhibition, which will also accompany an artist camp.

    The theme of the exhibition revolves around the objective of ‘Centralizing Peripheries’ or bringing women artists to the centre of the discourse on art.

    “I am delighted that Sahitya Kala Parishad has taken this initiative to showcase women artists. I am sure this exhibition will also inspire many young women to take up their talents,” said Delhi Chief Minister Smt Sheila Dikshit in her message.

    The exhibition will not only focus on senior artists but will also provide an opportunity to upcoming artists to share a platform with their seniors in the field.

    “It’s wonderful to bring together all the women artists of Delhi under one roof. The fact that we have 51 artists under this banner shows that women artists enjoy their own space in the field of contemporary art. I am sure this unique exhibition will also act as an inspiration for young women who want to pursue their love for art in a big way,” says Mr. Vishvamohan, Secretary, Sahitya Kala Parishad.

    Among the other artists whose works are being showcased at the exhibition are Chitra Joshi, Deepali Manglik, Seema Kohli, Kavita Jaiswal, Yuriko Ando Lochan, Shelly Jyoti, Archana Khurana, Nisha Aggarwal, Nivedita Pandey and many others.

    The artist camp will be followed by senior artists Shruti Gupta Chandra, Meena Deora, Surinder Kaur, Nidhi Agarwal, Nira Davar, Yuriko Ando Lochan, Ingrid Pitzer, Nupur Kundu, Rajnish Kaur, Prabha Shah from 21 March to 28 March, 2013 10:30 AM to 6:00 PM, and the participating installation artists are Gunjan Tyagi, Renu Bariwal and Anjali Goel showcasing at Mati Ghar Lawns.

    With the month of March, that observes the International Women’s Day, often associated with the efforts to celebrate women’s role in various fields, the exhibition adds another chapter to a series of celebrations that revolves around women’s art practices.

    ‘Vama: the Women Art Exhibition’ has brought together female art practitioners from three categories:  senior artists, mid-way practitioners and young art walkers. The participating artists come from a variety of art schools and bring a diverse range of styles and expressions.
