BUFFALO, NY AND BOSTON, MA :  The American Council of Engineering Companies of Massachusetts (ACEC/MA) has named Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc.  as a 2019 bronze award winner for engineering excellence for their work on the Richardson Olmsted Campus in Buffalo, NY.

In the 1870s, Henry Hobson Richardson and the landscape team of Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux designed the 203-acre Richardson Olmsted Campus as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane. By the 1980s, all but two buildings at this National Historic Landmark were

completely abandoned and the remaining ones were in disrepair. A team of engineers, architects, and preservationists collaborated to renovate the campus. In May 2017, an upscale hotel, restaurant, and conference center opened in three buildings, restoring a community gem and bringing new life to the Buffalo area. Simpson Gumpertz & Heger Inc. is headquartered in Waltham, MA.

The 2019 Engineering Excellence Awards were announced at the recent ACEC/MA Engineering Excellence and Awards Gala with special guest emcees Jonathan L. Gulliver, Highway Administrator at MassDOT and Frederick A. Laskey, Executive Director of MWRA.

“Each year we gather to celebrate and recognize engineering firms for projects that demonstrate innovation and excellence,” said Michael J. Walsh, PE, President of ACEC/MA and Vice President of CDM Smith. “We congratulate our winners who work tirelessly throughout the year to advance the goals and values of our organization and the industry.”
