Delhiites got a unique opportunity to witness an ancient form of Assamese dance drama, reminiscing the Broadway theatre, that tells the story of Lord Krishna’s childhood exploits.

The drama “Chordhora Jhumura” was part of an event organised to commemorate and celebrate the life and teachings of Assam’s 15th century saint-philosopher Srimanta Sankaradeva.

The “Srimanta Sankaradeva Movement – Delhi Initiative” plans to spread his universal message of equality and his creations like Ankia Bhaona, Jhumura and Xatriya dance forms across the country and the world. “Jhumura”, directed by Nirupama Mahanta, was created by Sankaradeva’s prime disciple Madhabdev to tell people about little Krishna. The idyllic pastoral life serving as the backdrop for the drama enhances its appeal.

The event, conceptualised by Shyamkanu Mahanta, was launched by veteran actor and its brand ambassador Victor Banerjee. A documentary film profiling the life and contributions of Sankaradeva titled “Srimanta Sankaradeva, the Colossal Icon” was screened.

The film, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Sanjib Sabhapandit, underlined the importance of Sankaradeva’s journey to mainland India – wherein he studied the classical literatures, engaged with scholars like Kabir, Guru Nanak and his endeavour to synthesise the little traditions with the great traditions and establish through such ‘Sagar Manthan’, the symbiotic relationship between India and Assam.

The film was followed by an audio-video message by scholar Kapila Vatsyayan who paid tribute and shared her views on the works and creation of Sankaradeva.

Another highlight was a musical performance by Bollywood singer Joi Barua. Actor Shabana Azmi, who was also present, felt it was “imperative we commit ourselves to Sankaradeva and promote him as a national icon so that India can learn about him”.

The event was organised by Trend MMS along with Assam Association, Delhi with support of the Ministry of DoNER and Culture. It was attended by a large audience comprising MPs, faculties of various colleges in Delhi, Planning Commission members and representatives, drama experts, dance exponents and Assamese people in Delhi.
