  • Apollo Adlux Hospital Employs Robotic Surgery for 34-Week Uterine Growth

    Published on November 28, 2023

Kochi: A 34-week uterine growth was successfully removed through state-of-the-art robotic surgery at Apollo Adlux Hospital, Angamaly, Ernakulam. The 1.940 kg weighing uterine growth was removed through expert intervention under the leadership of Dr. Urmila Soman, Senior Consultant & Robotic Surgeon in Minimally Invasive Gynaecology. It is the first time in Kerala, that a 34-week uterine growth has been removed through robotic surgery.

Sissy Sam, a native of Coorg, presented at the hospital after experiencing heaviness in her stomach. A subsequent detailed examination revealed multiple uterine fibroids measuring 20 cm long and 18 cm wide, with a growth equivalent to 34 weeks. The fibroids were located inside the uterus, surrounded by several nerves. Given the challenges of accessing the fibroids through conventional surgical methods, it was decided to remove the uterus through robotic hysterectomy surgery. The surgery was completed in a short time of 2 hours using advanced robotic technology. The patient fully recovered and left the hospital the very next day after the surgery.

Dr. Urmila Soman said that robotic surgery was necessary but challenging for a 34-week growing uterus. The doctor also emphasised that this robotic surgery is characterised by relatively zero pain and smaller incisions while avoiding the excessive blood loss associated with conventional surgery. The integration of 3DHD vision was critical to the success of the surgery. She further commented that using these advanced technologies in the field of gynaecology can create new possibilities in the field of health.

Sudarshan B, the CEO of Apollo Adlux Hospital, has stated that the removal of the uterus containing heavy fibroids through robotic surgery represents a significant advancement in Kerala’s healthcare sector. He further emphasised that Apollo Adlux is the first hospital in Kerala to successfully execute such a surgery, highlighting the institution’s dedication to delivering cutting-edge medical care for patients seeking treatment. Additionally, he mentioned that the departments of robotic gynaecology, urology, and gastroenterology surgery at Apollo Adlux are utilising the DaVinci XI robotic surgical system to perform surgeries. He explained that this technology allows for complex surgeries to be conducted with minimal incision, reduced blood loss, shorter hospitalisation, diminished scarring, and a faster return to normal life.
