Ms.Nilufer Jain-(Co-Founder- Educat)India is a developing country with population crossing a billion and despite producing well known doctors and health facilities, the country is still lacking behind in the terms of producing doctors to satisfy the needs of population. According to a recent World Health Statistics report, India has less than one doctor for a thousand people (0.6) as compared to China (1.4) per thousand people. In absolute numbers, the US – whose population is a fourth of India’s, has more doctors than India. There about more than nine lakhs shortage of doctor in our country due to various reasons.

There are about 63,000 seats available in total including both government and private medical colleges and each year about 6.5 – 7 lakh appear for the All India Pre Medical Test (AIPMT), resulting in more and more students dropping out from the medical sector. Adding to the woes are factors such as high reservation quota in government colleges (around 40%) and high capitation fees being charged by the private medical colleges. However, is this sufficed to write off a student with enough caliber to not take up medical education, who in the future can be a major contributing factor to the healthcare industry? The Answer is No.

There is no fault in the students’ choice that they choose the stream which is highly competitive. Rather we can say that they are not much aware about the global opportunity they can pitch to. Because of the lack of awareness or financial issues especially in the middle class family, they never imagine trying their luck in studying abroad. And if they know about studying abroad they are just informed about developed countries like America, UAE, and France etc whose fees are very high that even taking education loan gives you chills in your body.

Students rather face various problems in pre and post admissions for studying medical education abroad like 1.)Overall knowledge about course and country 2.) Admission process 3.) Course Decision.

1.) Unaware of complete knowledge: Generally, most of the students life decision taken by there parents only in our country. And parents are not much aware about the abroad medical education. They might know about the education studies like MBA, LAW but medical studies is still out of the league concept for them.

2.) Admission Process: There are few steps which should be in mind when you are planning to study abroad like the student then needs to make an informed decision about selecting a university abroad. For this certain criteria have to be kept in mind; namely:

    •             Recognition Status of the University by International Medical Boards and the Medical Council of India

    •             Availability of English Medium Medical Programs •           Fee Structure

    •             Facilities available in the university for accommodation, extra curricular, library, mess, etc

    •             Training methodology (this information can be easily provided by a consultant or available on the university website)

    •             Hospitals where clinical rotations are being provided (for example how big is the infrastructure, how many beds, etc)

    •             What are the domestic options available for practicing in that country

    •             How easy or difficult are the countries state and national level licensure examinations

    •             And lastly but not the least, how many Indian students having studied from that particular university have cleared the MCI Screening test in India

Once the students have collected information on all the above they can               then fill in the application form along with the requisite documents to formally apply to the university. Most universities abroad either have direct admission available for international students or require the students to pass an interview along a written test once the student has been admitted to the university and has reached the destination. This is to understand the student’s ‘skill set’‐ interest areas, weak and strong areas that would require more attention from the faculty.

3.) Decision of Course and College: This is the most important and careful part of the whole process because your college & course will decide what you going to be in future. It is up to you which college you want to study in and which course you want to choose whether you want to be a doctor or in nursing or in Health care or Pharmacist etc. Choosing the course will lead you to be that medical person you always wanted to be.

Countries like Ukraine , Phillipene , Gayana and Carribean islands provide special discounts to the international students who are studying in their university. And for studying in them you don’t need to born with a silver spoon. Apart from direct admission some easy education loan can be provided to the students with little verification of the student for security issues. Studying medical education abroad would be the new career
