  • Vijayawada: Ever since its launch in Vijayawada in 2015, bigbasket, India’s largest online supermarket has grown exponentially and developed a registered customer base of over 1.7 lakh. Vijayawada is a high-growth market for bigbasket and the company has revolutionized the grocery shopping experience for customers.

Fruits and vegetables is a popular category with the Vijayawada customers. bigbasket offers over 250 products in the fruits and vegetables category, along with 30,000 articles across all other categories.

Vijayawada is the new commercial capital of Andhra Pradesh and close to Amaravati.  Major agriculture based areas fall in near-by areas primarily with commercial and horticulture crops.  The location of bigbasket is also near farmer hubs which make us easy to procure & supply fresh fruits and vegetables, directly from farmers. This helps farmers earn more margins by avoiding commissions of intermediaries. Payments are made directly into farmer accounts on timely basis. bigbasket teams visit the farms in village daily and maintain the farmer data base and yearly crop calendar. They meet frequently with farmers and help them in good yield by suggesting good practices of farming which help them to grow vegetables better.

In the March 2017, bigbasket started the RPC (Repacking center) where all the own brand staples are processed and packed by maintaining utmost quality standards. RPC Vijayawada is first repacking center started by bigbasket in India. The production has reached 600 tons monthly in a span of two years. The final products are catered to all over the South India big basket Units. (Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Vizag and Vjayawada).

Speaking about this, Ms Pallavi Palkar, National Head – Tier 2 cities, bigbasket, said, “Vijayawada, being the commercial capital of AP, has been a high-growth market for us and customers in the city have pleasantly surprised us with their adoption rates. The city is one of South India’s major industrial centres and the adoption of online grocery shopping has happened relatively easily. The increased demand can be attributed to on-time delivery, no questions asked return policy, and competitive prices, apart from the availability of a wide range of products.”

bigbasket is creating milestones in the online retail market and is currently the one-stop-

shop for all kinds of products with a competitive delivery window. bigbasket’s operations have expanded to 26 cities in India recording about 6 million customer orders per month and a registered customer base of over 10+ million.

bigbasket’s differentiation lies in its private label brands and supply chain integration for fresh fruits, vegetables and meats. With the latest funding, bigbasket became the entrant to India’s unicorn club. In April, the Mirae Asset- Naver Asia Growth Fund (“Mirae-Naver”), CDC Group, and Alibaba Group led a $150 million round of fund raising for Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt Ltd, owner of the bigbasket brand. bigbasket aims to double its revenue to INR 6,300 crore in FY20.
