  • Director of Hola Venky, Sandeep Mohan Takes to Online Medium in This Day and Age of Booming Technology

    Published on April 1, 2015

Mr. Sanjay Gulati, Producer, Crawling Angel Films is proud to present Hola Venky – a film Holathat has travelled around the world under well-known indie filmmaker Sandeep Mohan’s concept of ‘The Great Indian Traveling Cinema’. Mr. Gulati is also the co-producer of this film along Mr. Giju John of Tiranga Productions, and Windcolor Studios. The film is a crowdfunded film with more than 36 contributors from all over the world supporting this film.

The extraordinariness about Hola Venky is that Sandeep chose to introduce the film to the audience at various cafes, bars, restaurants, art galleries, office spaces, homes, church halls, virtually any alternative space that was available. He has done these screenings in India, US and Singapore. This is what makes Hola Venky edgy, contemporary, and in sync with new audience that is technology-savvy. Sandeep writes and directs “personal” films which he believes in.

Hola Venky will witness an online release on April 2nd, 2015 through Mobile Phones, IPads & PCs and Laptops in over 110 countries around the world.

When it comes to distribution tactics, Director Sandeep Mohan says, “Hola Venky is my second feature film and is being distributed through what I call ‘The Great Indian Traveling Cinema.’ I travel with the movie to various alternative spaces within the country and show the movie, charging people on donation basis on a ‘Pay as you Wish, if you Wish Concept’. I carry a Projector, and project the movie on a wall or any screen. The fun part of these screenings for me is that I get to interact with my audience immediately after they have seen the movie. Also, the audience is happy since they get to see the movie at a space and time convenient for them, and they decide what to pay or if you pay. Till now, I have travelled with Hola Venky to many cities in India, US and Singapore and have had close to 90 screenings. I intend to travel to more spaces even after the online release.”

Sandeep feels that his audience is urban, niche, the office, new age audience who have a universal sensibility and hence it is better to focus on an online release since his audience is technology savvy. This is one of the reason Sandeep believes in taking Hola Venky on the traveling cinema route as he wanted to figure out a way to screen his movie to the audience at a space and time convenient for them.

Adding on the same lines, Mr. Sanjay Gulati, Producer, Crawling Angel Films who is co-producing the movie says, “I am glad to present Hola Venky since it has a universal appeal and I believe that the film has the potential to reach out to a large audience from across the world. I believe that Indian indie films are doing a great job of telling new stories in a format that the international and the new age Indian audience is able to relate to. Also films like Hola Venky are letting the world know that Indian films can push the barriers and innovate, and are not limited to the song-dance formula in conventional Bollywood films. I would be keen to personally back such niche, sensible, engaging films in the future too and give a platform through my company to such talent. I look forward to associating with such talent through my production house.”
