  • Examining the Relationship between Physical and Spiritual Wellness

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. : Science and religion are two subjects that are rarely combined. However, according to one couple in the medical field, they could not be more cohesive.

In “Lessons from the Body: From Physical Illness to Spiritual Wellness,” authors Clyde P. Sanchez, CFNP, Ph.D., and Jo Sanchez, RN, MSN, CNM, offer a testament to the connection between the physical body and the spiritual self. Their book examines what the physical body can teach about improving one’s relationship with God.

“This book is for those with a special interest in science, medicine and the workings of our physical bodies,” Jo said. “It can help to develop an understanding of the relationship between spiritual wellness and the principles that govern the healthy functioning of the human body.”

Both authors have an undergraduate nursing degree from Cornell University and a graduate degree from Yale University. Clyde has a PhD from the University of New Mexico and his doctoral dissertation focused on the relationship between physical, emotional and spiritual wellness.

“Throughout our studies, as we grew in our understanding of the human body, we grew in our knowledge of our relationship with God,” Clyde said. “The processes that promote physical wellness can be applied to spiritual growth. If you understand how a broken bone heals, you can better understand the steps that must be taken to mend a broken relationship.”
