The demand of foodgrains in the country is expected to touch 280 million tonnes by the year 2020-21. Speaking at a seminar in New Delhi today Joint Secretary in the Agricultural Ministry S.K.G.Rahate said that the government is committed to achieve this target by adopting several new initiatives. He said that owing to good monsoon last year the country had record foodgrains production and output of wheat and pulses touched an all time high. Mr. Rahate said that the agricultural sector is very crucial for the Indian economy as it provides employment to nearly 58 percent of the total workforce and contributes more than 14 percent of the GDP.
