  • Indian players have done wonders in the Tokyo Olympics and this holds true even for the Paralympics stars. Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adana have managed to earn gold and silver medals respectively in the men’s P4 mixed 50m pistol SHI. The achievement of both the stars has taken the tally of the medals to 15 in the Tokyo Paralympics. The Haryana government led by Manohar Lal Khattar has announced a cash reward of INR 6 crore and INR 4 crore to Manish Narwal and Singhraj Adana, respectively. The Haryana government further announced that they will be rewarded with Government Jobs too. 

    Haryana Government Has Been Showering Rewards

    In addition to rewarding Narwal and Adana with cash and government jobs, the Haryana Government also awarded an INR 2.5 crore to the para-athlete Harvinder Singh who won a bronze medal in archery in the Paralympics Games. It needs to be noted that it is the only medal won by India in archery in the game. 

    India’s Performance In Tokyo Paralympics 

    A total point of 218.2 was scored by Manish Narwal in the men’s P4 mixed 50m pistol SHI which in itself created a record in the game. His fellow teammate, Singraj Adana bagged a silver medal with a score of 216.7. After the historic win, praises from all over India were showered on them on different social media platforms. Further, Prime Minister Modi also spoke with both the players to congratulate them on the win. In return, the players thanked Modi for his words of encouragement and support. 

    Tokyo Paralympics have proved to be very rewarding for the Indian athletes. On the last day of the game, Krish Nagar and Suhas Yathiraj also won a gold and silver medal in the game. The performance of India has been wonderful with 19 medals with five golds. It managed to rank 24th amongst the 162 participating nations. In addition to the five gold medals, the country bagged eight silver and six bronze medals. 54 para-athletes from India participated in Tokyo Paralympics in nine different sports and 17 of these participants fetched medals. Further, India featured two multiple winners: Avani Lakhera won gold and bronze medal while Singhraj Adhana won silver and bronze medals. 

    Three of the 19 medals in the Paralympics were won by women, out of which two medals were won by Lekhara and one by Bhavinaben Patel. India managed to bag five medals in the shooting criteria with two golds, one silver and two bronzes. The win in the shooting sports placed India third on the leaderboard after China and Siberia. Additionally, a maiden appearance was made by badminton players of India in badminton and it managed to win four medals and finished fourth in the position. Praveen Kumar who is 18 years old became the youngest Paralympic player to earn a medal. Also, Devendra Jhajharia became the first Indian to earn medals in three different sports. Following the trend, Harvinder Singh became the first archer in the Tokyo Paralympics from India to earn a medal. 

    What Paralympic Stars Have Been Rewarded With?

    India truly values its Paralympic stars and it has generously rewarded the players. In addition to the Haryana government, even other state governments are rewarding their players. For instance, Avani Lekhara, Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar have been rewarded with INR 3 crores, 2 crores and 1 crore respectively. In addition to that, one might need to check their names in Sarkari Result for grabbing a government job but these three athletes have been directly appointed as Assistant Conservators of Forest in the State Forest Department. It needs to be mentioned that Lekhara’s performance in the game set a new Paralympics record. 

    Jai Ram Thakur, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister has awarded the silver medallist Nishad Kuar with INR 1 crore for his performance. On the other hand, silver medallist Mariyappan Thangavelu has been rewarded with INR 2 crore by MK Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. In addition to that Avani Lekhara of Rajasthan was rewarded by Anand Mahindra, Chairman of the Mahindra Group with the first customized sport utility vehicle for disabled people by the company. Rewarding the players is a must by the government to encourage further better participation and involvement in the sports of different games. This year, the performance of Indian athletes showed that there is a huge potential in the Indian players to bag medals for the country.
