Mumbai:   Mr. Rahul Shewale, Hon’ble Chairman, Standing Committee, Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) and Mr. Durgesh Telang, Zonal Vice President, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd (Maharashtra & Goa Zone) did the Bhoomi 6Poojan of ‘Waste Water Recycling Sewage Treatment Plant’ at its Mahim Causeway Pumping Station today.

Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will soon start an inward reprocessing of sewerage water at its Mahim Causeway pumping station at a capacity of a million liter per day. Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Limited (HCCBL) is supporting Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) to set-up a second level sewerage treatment plant at Bandra. Presently MCGM’s Bandra treatment facility does primary treatment and releases 425 MLD partially treated sewage in the sea by submarine outfall of about 5 km length. This will be a pilot project and a big step towards Water Reuse, Recycle initiative under Public – Private partnership.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Rahul Shewale, Hon’ble Chairman, Standing Committee said, TO be in corporate on location and then to be dessiminated to the media

Mr. Durgesh Telang, Zonal Vice President, Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd., stated that, “This is first of its kind project in India where our company has joined hands with Municipal Corporation to support Sewage Treatment project. The initiative is aimed at saving precious fresh water resources by using treated sewage water for non-drinking and non-domestic purposes. This project will serve multiple purposes at one go – a large visible project in the city of Mumbai and set a good example of public-private partnership and may become a catalyst for similar projects across the country”

MCGM discharges huge amount of sewage water at four places into the sea viz Malavani, Varsova, Mahim causeway (Bandra Reclamation) & Colaba. MCGM will reuse this water by installing ‘Waste Water Recycling Sewage Treatment Plant’ at above mentioned places which can save huge amount of potable water as this recycled water can be used for horticulture, cleaning and other than domestic purposes.

The proposed project is based on ‘Rotating Media Biological Reactor (RMBR)’, which is being installed with financial support from Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt. Ltd. at the pumping station. The company will bear all the expenses regarding the installation of the project and its operation as well as maintenance for the first three months. However, the ownership of the project remains with the MCGM and after the initial three months, the BMC will look after the project’s operation and maintenance. The recycled water’s distribution and use from the pumping centre will be decided by the MCGM.
