  • Hospital Rescues Four-Year-Old Child with Severe Head Injuries

    Published on March 15, 2024

Kochi : A four-year-old child sustained a severe head injury, resulting in a deep wound with exposed brain matter, after being involved in a distressing accident while returning from an Anganwadi with his mother. The child was struck by a vehicle. A four-hour Craniotomy procedure was performed to save the kid.

The frontal bone was splintered and driven inward, tearing through the dura, the brain’s protective covering. The wound was contaminated with sand, grit, and hair. The child experienced significant bleeding from the wound at the time of the accident.

“The severity of the accident placed the child in critical condition. Through careful surgery and treatment, the child was successfully saved. The bleeding from the wound was controlled, and all contaminated tissue was excised. The broken and inwardly driven bone fragments were elevated. Contused brain tissue and blood clots were removed from the brain. The depressed fracture was elevated and fixed using titanium mini-plates and screws. Once the neurosurgical procedure was complete, the scalp wound was repaired by our plastic surgeon.” stated Dr. Tharun Krishna, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon at Apollo Adlux Hospital, Kochi.

The medical team, led by Dr. Tharun Krishna, Senior Consultant Neurosurgeon, along with Dr. Aadithya Rangarajan, Plastic Surgeon, Department of Plastic Reconstruction, Aesthetic & Hand Surgery, and Dr. Prasanth A Menon, Neuroanesthesiologist performed a complex series of procedures to address the injury.

Despite the severity of the injury and the complexities involved in the surgical intervention, the child is now on the path to recovery. The medical team remains vigilant in providing post-operative care and support to ensure the child’s continued progress.
