Pune: It is rightly said that “There is no higher religion than human service. To work for the common good is the greatest creed.” Members of The Social Service League believed that life consists not only in seeing visions and in dreaming dreams, but in active contribution and willing service. Thus was formed a unique charitable institution in Bombay. Know more about this organization on Saturday 19th February 2011 at 8:30 pm exclusively on IBN-Lokmat.

In nineteenth century Naigaon, Parel, Sewree, Kalachowki, Byculla was full of Textile Mills and people who lived here were poorly educated lower middle class mill workers. They were not focused on work and were governed by superstitions. A group of social workers, Sir Narayan Chandawarkar, Sir Jamsetji jijibhai, Sir Henry Proctor, Shri. Gaganbiharila Mehta and many other prominent personalities strongly felt that living standards of these poor should be improved and they should be liberated from such evils. The League was formed in 1911 and since then has initiated varied activities like free mobile Library, Night Schools, Adult-Education, Industrial School for Women (ISW) etc. They also worked hard to inculcate hygienic and sanitary values in them. Social Service League was the first in the whole British India to run such kind of pure social activities.

As on today the league has pre-primary schools, primary schools, high schools and Jr colleges of their own. League’s Night School has completed 75 years and is one of the oldest in India.

Every week Garza Maharashtra features Organizations and Individuals who have played an integral part in the growth and development of Maharashtra. This week Garja Maharashtra focuses on The Social Service League which has transformed the lives of many underprivileged people in the state.
