New Delhi: Vuclip, the world’s largest independent mobile video service, today released its Global Video Insights Report for January 2012, which captures mobile trends for last month and looks back at some of the biggest searches of 2011.

After being the most searched celebrity on mobile videos in 2010, the country’s heartthrob Katrina Kaif retained her title of being the most searched in India in 2011 too. In a stunning revelation, Sonakshi Sinha emerged as a new find on mobile videos in 2011 to grab the second spot, despite not even ranking in the list of the top 10 searches for 2010. Jacqueline Fernandes, Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai were the other celebrities that made it to the top 10 most searched in 2011, despite not figuring in the list in 2010. Among other gainers, Deepika Padukone climbed to the #5 spot in 2011 as against ranking #7 in 2010. Outside India, Deepika ruled mobile video searches in Singapore, emerging as December’s most searched celebrity on mobiles, ahead of Justin Bieber, Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Lopez.

Among the major losers, Mallika Sherawat, who was at #2 in 2010, slipped to #7 in 2011’s most searched celebs in India on mobile. Sania Mirza, Rakhi Sawant and Priyanka Chopra, who ranked at #3, #4 and #9 respectively in 2010, did not find a place among the top 10 rankings for 2011.

Cricket World Cup was also a rage in India which made it one of the top 10 most searched topics on mobile devices in India. Says Salman Hussain, Vuclip’s Vice President – Business Development and Managing Director, India & Middle East, “In 2011, we saw major trend shifts emerging in mobile video consumption. Cricket, of course, is India’s other passion besides Bollywood, but we also noticed impressive demand for regional videos such as Telugu movie clips of Shri Ram Rajyam featuring Nayantara. Bhojpuri movie songs and Bhojpuri devotional music clips also registered good video views on mobile in India, led by videos of Devi Maa.”

As many as five different versions of the Kolaveri Di song made it among the top 10 mobile videos in India in December, three of which were mobile videos relating to Sonu Niigaam’s son, Nevaan, at #1, #8, and #10 positions in the Top 10 India Videos category. The other two versions included female versions of Why This Kolaveri Di (#4) and a digitally remixed version by Dhanush (#7).

From Hollywood, the only movie release Indians seem to be most eagerly awaiting is The Amazing Spider-Man, featuring Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker, pushing its trailer to the ninth rank among the Top 10 Mobile Videos in India in December. The movie is slated for release in India and the US on the 3rd of July, 2012.

Commenting on the rapid growth in mobile video consumption, Salman says, “Video snacking on mobile has become a great way of refreshing oneself anytime, anywhere, in India and around the globe. Our impressive growth is a proof of this rapidly increasing mobile video consumption trend. Vuclip registered over 560 million video views last December, viewed by nearly 40 million unique users. Every day, more than 3 million searches are performed on Vuclip, which provides a great opportunity to grab the attention of today’s dynamic mobile users through immersive content.”
