Mr. Rampraveen Swaminathan, MD & Chief Executive Officer of Mahindra Logistics Ltd., has provided his views by encapsulating appreciation and support for these initiatives:
“We commend the recent government initiatives aimed at improving conditions for drivers, including the introduction of an innovative GPS-based electronic toll collection system on national highways and the announcement of resting facilities.
The revolutionary satellite-based toll collection system is set to transform toll payment methods, promising a seamless flow of vehicles without the need to halt at toll booths. Leveraging GPS technology, it ensures continuous tracking, accurately calculating toll charges based on the actual distance covered. This technological advancement assures drivers of a smooth and continuous journey without any disruptions or inconveniences.
Furthermore, we appreciate the Indian government’s recent decision to establish 1,000 driver rest facilities nationwide, recognizing the pivotal role of truck drivers covering over 2.8 million trucks and 100 billion kilometers annually. Fatigue among drivers is common and it increases as time-on-road increases impacting their safety on the road. These state-of-the-art facilities aim to significantly enhance the well-being and working conditions of truck drivers. By addressing common health issues resulting from extended working hours and inadequate hygiene, such as dry eyes and chronic allergies, these facilities provide a dedicated space for refreshment and comprehensive well-being. This, in turn, contributes to safer roads and reduced accidents.
At Mahindra Logistics, we deeply respect the indispensable role played by drivers in India’s dynamic logistics and transportation industry. In recognition of their remarkable contribution, we unveiled an inspiring book titled ‘Desh Chaalak’ last year to raise awareness about the challenges that drivers encounter on the road. Acknowledging our responsibility, we have implemented a specialized training program under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY), successfully training over 20,000 drivers nationwide. Through initiatives like Samantar and the Sankalp scholarship program, we actively contribute to improving working conditions, fostering awareness, and supporting the education of drivers’ children. Our commitment to a supportive ecosystem reflects our dedication to empowering and uplifting this essential workforce, ensuring their well-being and safety on the road.”
