Calling for probity in public life, the Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh today said that when politicians and public servants deviate from integrity in personal action and behaviour, then it hurts the people. He told a group of IAS probationers, who called on him, that corruption in public services cannot be allowed.

The Prime Minister added that people should not forget that India was still a country where millions and millions of people go hungry. Referring to the challenges of naxalite activities, terror and communal tensions, he said it was their duty to learn what were the factors which lead people go astray and to bring the misguided elements back to mainstream thinking.

The Prime Minister said law and order must be adminstered effectively and root causes of social and economic discontent must be found out while addressing problems of disadvantaged sections.
