  • Oil reduction mission during winters would not prove to be beneficial as it will eventually dry up your skin to a larger extent, reason being during winter’s skin tends to lose 25 percent of its ability to retain moisture. As weather conditions change, so, too, should your skin care routine.  IMG_0009Hence, switch to a moisturizer that’s oil-based, rather than water-based, as the oil will create a protective layer on the skin that retains more moisture than a cream or lotion.  Look out for “no clogging” oils, like avocado oil, mineral oil, primrose oil, or almond oil as they would not clog up the pores and will let your skin breath.

    Dark Circles

Day to day stress and tiredness tend to leave the delicate skin under your eyes easily irritated in winter. Nasal congestion due to cold or flu can also dilate and darken veins that run from your eyes to nose. To help alleviate dark circles start using an eye cream, drink plenty of water and boost blood circulation through regular exercise. To disguise dark circles, use a light-diffusing cream concealer. Apply and blend with your little finger, then lightly dust over a sheer, peachy loose powder to balance the blue tone of the dark circles.

    Avoid petroleum for lips

Don’t neglect your lips, which have a tendency to dry out in the winter. Keep balm with you and apply often as the temperature drops.  Avoid products that contain petroleum as it can clog the pores in your lips, making it hard for the moisture to get where it needs to be. You can’t properly moisturize skin that is congested.

    Don’t put away the sunscreen

Sunscreen is not just for summers. Winter sun — can still damage your skin. Try applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen to your face and your hands about 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply frequently if you stay outside a long time.

    Drink water

To stay hydrated in winters should always be a top priority. We all get more dehydrated in the winter, so it’s important to drink more water. This is a very simple, but beneficial tip for people wanting to maintain healthy skin.

    Cracked Heels

Apart from regular pedicure, it is important to moisturize your feet regularly. Follow this foot-softening routine once a week: apply a rich moisturizer to your feet, and then soak them in really warm water with a few drops of nourishing oil (such as jojoba). Let them soak for 15-20 minutes, then while still damp slough off dead skin with a pumice.

    Brittle nails

Washing hands more often in hot water – can take toll on your nails. Once a week, rub cuticle oil into and around nails to keep them hydrated. Also get into the habit of rubbing moisturizer into your cuticles and nails after you wash your hands. Keep a tube of moisturizer next to the kitchen or bathroom sink as a reminder.

    Dry Skin

It’s tempting to stand under a long, hot shower when it’s cold outside, resist the urge. Turn down the heat or shorten your shower time and moisturize straight after the shower while your skin is still damp, using a cream that creates a barrier to stop moisture from evaporating. Also apply a creamy-based mask once a week as a moisture booster.

    Feed your Skin

Your winter diet can have a huge impact on your skin. Eat foods that contain omega 3s like ground flax seed and salmon. Eating foods that contain antioxidants that fight free radicals like blueberries, spinach, and other leafy greens are great for your skin as well.

    Ditch the Pump

When choosing a moisturizer for the winter, look for products that come in a jar rather than a pump. A pump and pour bottle has a higher water content and PH base that can dry out skin. The thicker formula is better suited for skin parched by chilly winter conditions.
