After spending 26 days behind bars in IPL spot-fixing case, cricketer Sreesanth was released from Tihar Jail on Tuesday night along with Ankit Chavan and 17 others.

Sreesanth, who was arrested along with Chavan and another player Ajit Chandila on May 16 from Mumbai by Delhi Police, did not speak to waiting media outside Tihar Jail.

All the 19, including Sreesanth, Chavan and 14 alleged bookies, were granted bail on Monday by a court in New Delhi. Sreesanth was in police custody for the first 13 days while for the rest of the period he was lodged in Tihar Jail. In between, Chavan was granted interim bail for his marriage.

On Monday, a Delhi court while granting bail in the IPL spot-fixing case indicted Delhi Police for slapping the stringent provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) on cricketers Sreesanth, Chavan and the 17 others.

The court said that there was prima facie “no sufficient material” against the accused to establish their “nexus” with organised crime syndicate. Besides the two cricketers, the court also granted the relief to 17 other accused, including 14 bookies, on a personal bond of Rs 50,000 with one surety of the like amount.

Delhi Police have so far arrested 26 persons, including Sreesanth and two of his Rajasthan Royals teammates – Chavan and Ajit Chandila – in connection with the case.

Besides the 19 who were granted bail by the court, six others were in judicial custody till June 18 while one of the alleged bookies, Ramesh Vyas, is in police custody till June 18. Chandila and six others have not yet applied for bail.
