  • Study Finds Connection Between Household Chemicals and Obesity

    Published on May 16, 2018

Unfortunately, that connection isn’t good. To put it simply, researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health identified a group of PFASs chemicals that are directly linked to obesity. They have a particularly strong effect on regaining weight after dieting in women. As if that alone isn’t enough, these same chemicals also have ties to cancer, immune dysfunction, and hormonal issues. The worst thing of all is that they are extremely common and have been used in various industries for 60+ years. Today one can find them in anything from pans to clothes to drinking water.

New Study Explained: How Are PFASs Dangerous?

The study was focused on examining the effects of elevated blood levels of PFASs in humans. Previous studies on the effects of these ‘obesogenes’ showed that they did increase the rate of obesity in animals. However, information on human effects has been lacking. Now, researchers know exactly what elevated blood levels of PFASs do with the body.

And what they do is interfere with a person’s natural weight regulation. The potency of this interference is so big that the study concludes these chemicals are a contributor to the current epidemic of obesity.

The majority of PFAS research that exists today explores the connections between these chemicals and deadly diseases, like cancer. Their role in obesity has been severely underestimated. The study will hopefully change this and highlight the extreme dangers of using these chemicals.

The study indicated that people with a higher level of PFASs in their blood regain more weight after a weight loss diet. Women show the strongest connection and regain about 2.2-4.4 pounds of weight for every 13.2 pounds lost.

The researchers believe that this occurs due to the fact that people with a higher level of PFASs in the blood have a lower basal metabolic rate.

How to Avoid Weight Loss Interference from PFASs

PFASs chemicals are everywhere, so one can’t avoid them completely. Therefore, people need to look for weight loss solutions that will help them overcome their negative influence.

Taking supplements can give the extra-kick the diet needs. But this will work only if one chooses the right kind of product. Appetite suppressants, like phentermine are usually the best way to start. However, there are many types phentermine pills. So, when looking for the best one, one needs to ask not only ‘does phentermine work?’ They also need to research what other elements does the pill contain and what do they do?

For maximum efficiency, choose products that contain caffeine and citrus aurantium. These ingredients are called metabolism boosters because they can speed up the conversion of food into energy in different ways. As PFASs’ main weapon seems to be the slowing of this process, a pill like that will be a great counter.

Another important step to take in order to avoid the negative effects of PFASs is to give up on fast food and packaged foods. These chemicals are often used during the production of these. They reside in food wrappings, but from there they contaminate the food and get inside one’s bloodstream.

Note that due to the PFASs’ repellent properties, they are a common ingredient in water and stain-resistant products, including clothes. Think carefully before buying those and research the manufacturer and the composition of the fabric. As PFASs are repellants, so they are nearly always present in non-stick pans and pots. This means they contaminate every meal cooked on those utensils.

Remember that once PFASs are inside the body, they will be very difficult to flush. This is what makes them so dangerous and nearly impossible to avoid. Therefore, one should always research the products they intend to buy to determine if they are PFAS and/or fluoro-free.
