  • Telangana Tops in India in Caesarean Operations: Dr. M. Prakasamma, who plays an advocacy role to Govt for Midwifery for improving maternal and child birth.

    Hyderabad : India’s top experts and activists on birth related subjects took part in the Celebrations of International Day for Midwife in the city on Sunday at LV Prasad Films Lab at Banjara Hills .These include: Subarna Ghosh, an activists campaigning to make hospitals publicly declare their Caesarean numbers; Dr. M. Prakasamma, founder of SOMI(Society of Midwives, India, a national professional organization with 10,000 members; and Ms.Ruth Malik, an Australian living in India founder of Founder of Birth India,  a non-profit body, she is adoula and hypnobrithing practitioner; Dr. Viajaya Krishnan, Certified Professional Midwife (CPM), a leading official Lamaze Certified Childbirth Educator in India and founder of The Sanctum, the center of natural birth and Dr. Jayanthi; Dr Archana from Apollo Hospitals.

    They also participated in the panel discussion organized to mark the occasion—International Day for Midwife. The panel discussion was moderated by C. Vanaja.

    Participating in the panel discussion Dr. M Prakasamma said Telangana leads in India in caesarean births.

    Subarna Ghosh said talking openly Sex and Vagina is taboo. So what empowerment are we talking. I am being treated criminal for campaigning to make hospitals publicly declare their Caesarean operations numbers. Why should so many women die for normal, physiological process called pregnancy and birth.

    If you want to have normal delivery, Midwife is key Subarna Ghosh observed.

    Dr Archana said she was being a Medical Doctor, begged herself for a normal birth.  Doctors unfortunately today are not equipped to handle normal births. They are so tuned to Caesareans that they do t have to me learn also.

    When doctors have not seen are handled single normal delivery during their MBBS Course , how are they going handle normal births asked moderator Vanaja. Babies are brought in to this world unnaturally, told Dr. Vijaya Krishnan.

    Dr. M. Prakasamma said for years together the institutions have spread message to women that you are womb. You are a machine. Come to us and go home with the baby. Now women are saying why wait? Cut us. It is a sad situation. But, things are going to change soon. Government of I dis is introducing Mid Wife Training in a very large scale, she observed.

    The panelists have also also opined that Natural Births as a subject must be included Medical Education and Curriculum.

    Organized by Hyderabad based a decade old only of its kind of a center for natural birthing, The Sanctum, it was graced by well over 200 people, midwife professionals, doctors, mothers, Moms to be etc.

    Midwives are qualified to international standards are care givers who are skilled so well can provide 87% of services needed by mothers and newborns.  Midwives are experts in understanding this Physiology of Labour and Birth, and therefore experts in Normal Births informs Dr. Vijaya Krishnan

    International Day of the Midwife is observed in over 50 countries all over the world on May 5 every year. The day highlights the work of midwives. It was first celebrated in the year 1991.  The idea of having a day dedicated to Midwife and honor them for their role got momentum in 1987 after its conference held in the year 2014 in the Netherlands.

    Midwives and people with midwifery skills, according to Dr. Vijaya Krishnan, Founder of The Sanctum, the center for Natural births is a Hyderabad based only of its kind of a center in India– are the main caregivers for women and their newborns during pregnancy, labor, childbirth and in the post-delivery period. Skilled midwives are the difference between life and death for hundreds of thousands of women and infants every year.

    The film Birthing with Love produced by The Sanctum, the Centre for Natural Births, one of its kind in India was launched and screened for the guests.

    The film according to Dr. Vijaya Krishnan, Founder of The Sanctum is aimed to change our understanding of Childbirth. The Movie describes a new paradigm in Natural Birth at The Sanctum Natural Birth Center.
