New Delhi: Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today said that it will take 2-3 weeks times to re-calibrate 2 lakh ATMs for vending out new 2000 and 500 rupees notes.

Briefing reporters in New Delhi today, Mr Jaitley appealed to everyone to do as many transactions as possible through electronic means.

He said, his Ministry is constantly monitoring the cash crunch following demonetisation of currency and also assured that there is adequate currency in the currency chests of Reserve Bank.

Mr Jaitley said, the objective of the scheme is clean money and clean transactions. He said, stock details have been sought from jewellers on reports of dealings in defunct currency and the Government will not allow any illegal transaction in bullion.

The Finance Minister said, State Bank of India alone has got 47 thousand 868 crore rupees deposits in the last two days and the total deposits in all the banks must be 2 to 2.25 lakh crore rupees.

He said, there are reports of misuse of Jan Dhan accounts and concerned department will look into any unlawful activities. Mr Jailey said, Chip in 2000 rupees note and digital lockers are concocted rumours. He said, it is a massive operation to replace 86 per cent of currency under circulation.

Dismissing the criticism over the government’s move to scrap 500 and 1,000 rupees currency notes, Mr Jaitley dubbed the political statements being made about demonetisation as irresponsible.

He said, some people have a special problem to this effort of cleansing.
