  • Yingluck Shinawatra, the youngest sister of outlawed former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is now set to become Thailand’s first female prime minister.

“I want to insist that Puea Thai is insisting on implementing the policy that we have mentioned to people during our campaign. As we mentioned to the people, we will do our best to carry out our duty and will not disappoint you”

Thaksin and his sister enjoy the support of the urban and rural poor “red-shirt” supporters in the northern and northeastern provinces.

Thaksin, speaking in exile in Dubai, now says that reconciliation in Thailand is more important than his return to the country.

“I am not in a hurry to go back, I want to see the reconciliation to happen first, if there is reconciliation and I will be part of the solution then I will be there, if I will be part of the problem then I will not be there. I am settled here.”

Outgoing Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva has conceded his party’s defeat.

“The Puea Thai Party has won the election, and the Democrat Party concedes defeat. I would like to congratulate the Puea Thai Party for the right to form a government. I also want to congratulate Yingluck as the soon-to-be prime minister and especially the first female prime minister of the country.”

Pheu Thai party has won 260 seats, giving it a majority in the 500-seat parliament.
