Off-spinner R Ashwin completed his second five-wicket haul of his career as West Indies folded their first innings at a mammoth 590 before India made a brisk reply to reach 74 for one at lunch on the third day of the third and final cricket Test on Thursday.

Ashwin (5/156), who had bagged 6/47 in the West Indies second innings in the first Test in Delhi, claimed the last Windies batsman in the form of Devendra Bishoo 3.1 overs after the visitors resumed the day at 575 for nine at the Wankhede Stadium.

West Indies then struck a big blow to India by sending back danger man Virender Sehwag, leaving India 516 runs behind and needing 315 more runs to avoid following on.

On a wicket that still played true as on the first two days, the hosts rocketed off to 67 in less than 15 overs with Sehwag and his opening partner Gautam Gambhir making a string reply before the former was out for a 50-ball 37.

At the lunch break, Gambhir was batting on 30 after a 101-minute stay at the crease with four fours in 52 balls. Rahul Dravid was giving him company on one.

Gambhir and Sehwag began the reply in a positive manner that they are known for. The former settled down after fishing dangerously outside the off-stump while the latter was his usual, ebullient self.

Both the batsmen were confronted by packed off-side fields, even some unusual field positions like a fly slip behind the gully for Sehwag, but still managed to find the gaps with ease against speedsters Fidel Edwards and Ravi Rampaul who opened the visitors’ bowling.

Gambhir, after surviving a leg before appeal by fast bowler Edwards, went on the offensive by square-driving the bowler for his first boundary in the third over of the day.

He hit two more off-side boundaries against both the fast bowlers while Sehwag used minimum footwork to send the ball past the ropes twice despite a 7-2 field.

Sehwag then stepped out in disdain against Darren Sammy, when the Windies captain brought himself on after the 10th over in place of Edwards, and deposited the ball over extra cover for a six.

The 50 of the opening stand, which came with the six, was raised in just 54 minutes after which Gambhir square-cut Rampaul for a four.

Sehwag, looking good for a big score, was out when Sammy got his revenge by clean bowling the swashbuckling opener with a ball that moved in a shade and sneaked through the gap between bat and pad as he stretched forward for a drive.

Sehwag’s 37 contained three fours and a six off 50 balls.

Gambhir and Dravid were pegged back by some tight bowling by Sammy, Rampaul and Edwards. The latter got his first run — a single — from the 15th ball he faced.

Earlier, India dismissed the last West Indian wicket 16 minutes after start of play when Ashwin, bowling round the wicket, clean-bowled last man Devendra Bishoo when the tail-ender tried an almighty heave to leg to end the visitors’ innings off the 19th ball of the morning.

Left-handed Bishoo added 10 runs to his overnight two while Edwards remained unconquered on 11.

The tourists added 15 runs today before losing their last wicket and the total is their highest in 36 years.
