  • BHU completes its 100 years of glorious existence

    Banaras Hindu University, a name of excellence, scientific researches and technological innovations, was founded in 1916 to help bhupromote the sustainable development, growth and eradication of poverty, this glorious institution of excellence has completed 100 years of its eventful journey.

    This globally reputed temple of learning was established by Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya in 1916.

    BHU was able to establish its identify brick by brick and its reputation spread throughout the country and across the continents.

    BHU was built and nourished by Mahamanna out of contributions from beggars to kings.

    Perhaps this was the reason why, among many titles bestowed upon him, Mahamanna was also called a “Prince of Beggars”.

    Malaviya’s vision was to generate national spirit through the power of education and righteousness, achieving the economic development of the country.

    The University has two campuses. University’s main campus spread over 1,300 acres in Varanasi. Main campus is organised into 5 institutes and 14 faculties and more than 124 departments.

    While the second campus South campus, spread over 2,700 acres, hosts the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and is located in Barkachha in Mirzapur district, about 60 km from Banaras.

    The University started functioning from 1st October, 1917 with the Central Hindu College as its first constituent College.

    The Engineering College was the first to start functioning in the University campus.

    Following that, the building of the Arts College, the Physical Laboratory, the Power House, and several workshops of the Engineering College and some residential quarters were ready by 1921.

    The Department of Industrial Chemistry was started in July, 1921.

    The College which was made to run at Kamachha was shifted in 1921 to a new building known as “Faculty of Arts” inside the University.

    The formal opening ceremony of the new buildings was performed on the 13th December, 1921, by Prince of Wales. BHU is one of the largest residential universities in Asia.

    Madan Mohan Malaviya indeed occupies a unique position among the freedom fighters and social reformers of our country.

     

    The BHU has produced many great freedom fighters and Nation builders. It has immensely contributed to the progress of the nation.
