  • Save Mount Everest 2011 -2012 campaign has been launched with the aim of cleaning Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak and its surrounding areas from garbage. Announcing the launch of the programme in Kathmandu, the organizers said the clean -up expedition will be organized between April15th and June this year. President of Everest Summiteer’s Association Wanngchuu Sherpa said, around three hundred mountaineers will take part in the campaign. He said approximately eight tons of garbage will be collected and removed from Mount Everest and it’s surrounding areas.

    The programme is a two -year project that will focus on solid waste management in the Everest region by collecting and recycling the garbage. Government of Nepal has joined hands with other stakeholders, Everest Summiteers Association of Nepal, Eco-Himal, Nepal Mountaineering Association and national and international agencies. According to mountaineering experts there is around sixty tons of garbage which includes oxygen cylinders, gas cartridges, old tents, ropes carcasses as well as human wastes.
