  • EVERY GAMESA INDIA TURBINE, A GREEN TURBINE!

    Published on November 16, 2012

Chennai : Gamesa Wind Turbines Pvt. Ltd. a global technological leader in the wind industry, today announced the inauguration of their Green Turbine GamesaProject. This project was launched by Dr. M S Swaminathan, Agriculture Scientist and Chairman, M S Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in the esteemed presence of Mr. P Krishnakumar, MD, Orient Green Power Company Ltd and Mr. Ramesh Kymal, CMD, Gamesa India and senior officials from Gamesa.

Gamesa Green Turbine Project has been initiated at Gamesa Wind Farms in India with an objective to reduce the carbon footprints in manufacturing, erection, commissioning and operation / maintenance of wind turbines.

Although the power generated from the wind turbine generators (WTG) are green, the turbine has its own carbon footprints during the process of manufacturing, operation/maintenance, transport, dismantling, and transmission.

The Mathematics of CO2 emission in a Wind Turbine Generator**:

    1.      The total emission of Carbon-di-oxide when multiplied by the amount of CO2emitted for 1 kWh* is 8.03 Grams

    2.      The total amount of energy consumed during the entire life time of Gamesa 850 KW Turbine is nearly 25,50,000 kWh

    3.      The carbon footprint of 1 number of Gamesa 850 KW Wind Turbine Generator is calculated as around 20476 kilograms of Carbon dioxide.

The Green Solution to counter the above mathematics of CO2 emission:

To offset the 20476 kilograms of CO2 per 850KW WTG, 115 tree saplings are being planted in the wind farm. These 115 trees will absorb the carbon emission of one Gamesa 850 KW turbine within a span of 10 years.

®    Over 100,000 Trees planted in various wind farms and another 200,000 in 2013

®    Every Gamesa India Turbine, A Green Turbine!

This program is probably first of its kind in wind power industry. A short documentary film is attached herewith in a CD, highlighting the significance of carbon footprint reduction and how the Gamesa Green Turbine project was conceptualized.

In a statement, Gamesa India states –

    Coal

For every 1 K.W.H of energy, 370 kg of coal is burnt, for every Gamesa G58 850 KW Turbine, 6,66,000 tonnes of coal is avoided annually, this lifetime period of the turbine of say 20 years, saves us over 133,20,000 tonnes of coal

    Carbon Dioxide

For every 1 K.W.H of energy, 927 kg of carbon-dioxide is emitted from coal, and for every Gamesa G58 850 KW Turbine, 16,68,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emission is reduced annually, this for the lifetime period of the turbine, 333,72,000 tonnes of carbon-dioxide emissions are reduced.
