  • Gandhi Vichar Manch suggests improvements for Mumbai Local trains

    Published on July 13, 2011

Mumbai. Mumbai local trains are getting worse everyday and many commuters meet with accidents everyday. But, the railways have not taken any concrete steps to address the problems. Manmohan Gupta, chairman of the Gandhi Vichar Manch in Malad(West),Mumbai has given some suggestions for railways to improve upon.

    1. On goods trains, the railways have a policy of accepting certain tonnage of goods or animals. But, for Mumbai local trains, the compartments do no not have such policy. What about them? If Mumbai locals have automatic gates like the metro trains feature, people will stop foot board travel.

    2. Local trains in some countries have air conditioning. Even Metro trains have. Long distance trains have 3 tier A/C coaches to reduce the cost. Mumbai locals should have seating arrangements like those of metro trains, so that more people can stand and travel and they don’t have to pay more.

    3. Like metro is built above the land, Mumbai locals should also be built on elevated facilities. New tracks should be laid from Churchgate to Borivali to Virar, so that it can keep pace with growth of Mumbai.

    4. The elevated stations should have escalators so that handicapped, seriously ill and senior citizens do not face problems.

    5. A lot of outstation trains origin from CST or Kurla Terminus. Travelers from Virar and Borivali face considerable difficulty and have to get down at multiple places to reach these stations. Railways should arrange direct trains for passengers from Virar / Borivali to reach Kurla and CST.

    6. Mumbai Central should be renamed as Rajiv Gandhi Terminus to honor the ex. prime minister who was born in Mumbai and worked for technology development.

Gandhi Vichar Manch has sent these suggestions to the Railway Ministry and looks forward the ministry implements it as soon as possible.
