  • Vizag: Gangavaram Port Limited, India’s deepest and multi-purpose port celebrated the World Environment Day by initiating a week long Green belt development and awareness program at the port premises to express their commitment towards environmental protection and sustainability.

    This year’s theme for the World Environment day 2018 was ‘Beat Plastic Pollution”. Adopting this theme, the port is working towards curbing the plastic menace.

    According to the United Nations Organization (UNO), approximately 12 million tonnes of plastic garbage enters the waters. The plastic waste epidemic is evident all over the globe; animals have reportedly died after ingesting it, and it has caused damage to the soil because of microscopic plastic particles have contaminated the very soil that is used to grow our foods.

    Gangavaram Port Senior Officials and Employee voluntarily participated in the “Green Rally” event organized by AP Pollution Control Board, Visakhapatnam. The event was flagged at RK Beach and was attended by people from all walks of life.  Keeping in line with the current year’s theme of Beat Plastic Pollution, Gangavaram Port began the Environment Day celebrations on 31st May, 2018 by conducting awareness programmes on Plastic pollution in villages like Gandhinagar, HB colony, Vuda colony Phase-2, Gangavaram village etc.  As a part of the celebrations the staff and the management of the port initiated the green drive by planting more than 35,000 saplings, with a pledge to plant more than 80,000 saplings in the port premises and neighbourhood area during the year. The port management also undertook Environmental awareness programmes, workshops as a part of week-long Environment day celebrations. Everyone connected with the Port is being made a partner in the programme of reducing usage of plastics and avoid plastic pollution.

    The program was attended by Sri Sambasiva Rao, CEO, Sri. B. Balakrishna, Vice President, Vigilence (R&R and Security), Sri G Brahmaiah, Director (S&P),  Smt D Jyothi, AVP (Environment) and along with key staff and members from the port.
