    Published on March 8, 2013

New Delhi : In a fitting tribute to all the unsung women who have silently worked to enrich the cultural heritage of India, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts is set to unroll a week-long extravaganza to highlight their multifarious contributions as the life blood of the nation.

In collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya, Bhopal,  to mark the International Women’s Day, the IGNCA will host a week of festivities from March 8 to 14 to celebrate the role of women in cultural heritage.

Women artists and folk art performers from all over India will converge on Delhi to partake in this unique celebration. So, if you want to taste a slice of this all- women extravaganza, make sure you drop in at IGNCA next week.

‘Bhumika’ will see women artists from all over India demonstrate their art and craft in a series of skills including wood carving, painting, clay modeling, basketry, music, dance and many more.

A lecture on ‘Songs of the Women Seers of India’ by Dr. Subhadra Desai and a talk by Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan on ‘Continuity in Indian Civilization – Role of Women’ will be the other highlights for people interested in analyzing the role of Indian women in the light of history.

“Women have played an intrinsic role in the cultural trajectory our country has followed. Their contributions in preserving the social and cultural fabric are significant and need to be recognized. We want to celebrate women in a big way,” says Deepali Khanna, Member Secretary of IGNCA.

Besides demonstrations and workshops, the festival will feature a series of exhibitions on pertinent themes of the day including cultural barriers in women’s health, and the need to save the girl child.

The exhibitions at the Twin Art Gallery will also showcase ‘the invisible role of women in cultural heritage’. The festival will end on March 14 with a performance by an all women drummers troupe.
