What’s New in the 2023 Curling Season?

From this season, there will not be a tiebreaker draw in any Grand Slam of Curling event except for the Princess Auto Players’ Championship’.

If teams are tied for the final playoff spot(s), their draw-to-the-button shootout totals will determine the advancing side. This will apply in both the men’s and women’s divisions in both tiers.

The Grand Slam of Curling: Format

The HearingLife Tour Challenge is divided into two tiers, with 32 men’s teams and 32 women’s teams. Tier 1 features the top-ranked teams from around the globe, with the next-ranked teams in Tier 2.

All divisions are classified into four pools for the round-robin stage. Teams are scheduled to play four games against teams from an opposite pool. Pool A teams will face Pool D teams, and Pool B teams will play against Pool C teams. The top eight teams overall, regardless of pools, advance to the playoffs.

The Grand Slam of Curling: Preview

There will be new champions in Tier 2 after Team Dropkin and Team Grandy, winners of last year’s title, move to the higher rank and compete in Tier 1.

This season, among 32 total tier-1 teams, there are only 12 teams, six in the women’s pool and six in the men’s draw.

South Korea’s Seung-Youn Ha, Italy’s Stefania Constantini, and Scotland’s Rebecca Morrison are among the new international women’s teams in the field.

In the men’s event, Wouter Gosgens of the Netherlands, Norway’s Magnus Ramsfjell, and American Korey Dropkin are the newcomers.

Team Bottcher, Matt Dunstone, Gushue, and Kevin Koe hold top-10 spots in the men’s world rankings, while Team Jones, Rachel Homan, Kerri Einarson, and Kate Cameron are in the women’s top 10.

Each season, we see some new-look rosters, and this year is no different. Team Jones has gone from a five-player rotation to a four-player line-up after Mackenzie Zacharias decided to step back from competitive curling for the season.

Also, we are seeing an all-new Team Cameron featuring skip Kate Cameron, third Meghan Walter, second Taylor McDonald, and lead Mackenzie Elias. After nine seasons at third, Cameron returns to her skip roots. She has played with McDonald for five years, most recently with Team Scheidegger.

The Grand Slam of Curling: Participating Teams

As mentioned above, Pool A teams are scheduled to play Pool D teams, and Pool B teams play Pool C teams in the round-robin stage.

The event’s defending men’s champion, Team Edin, won the title last season without its skip. Niklas Edin suffered a knee injury during warmups for the semifinals. Edin, also the winner of the Tour Challenge in 2016, is looking to become the first to three-peat on the men’s side in the event.
