  • Revealed: The United States Is The Second Most Disaster-Prone Country on Earth

    Published on April 15, 2020

Berlin, Germany: – bestcasinosites.net, a platform for finding trusted online casinos, has released a study that uncovers your odds of experiencing a natural disaster. It analyses historical data on earthquakes, tsunamis, and lightning strikes to identify the countries worldwide in which you are most likely to experience a natural disaster.

The study distributes earthquakes and tsunamis between 2000 and 2017 that measured above 7.5 on the Richter scale across 143 countries. It also distributes historical deaths caused by lightning strikes across the same countries (deaths rather than events, because lightning strikes can only be considered a disaster when they cause a fatality). There are clear differences in the results depending on each country’s proximity to a tectonic fault line. Indonesia straddles the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’ where four tectonic plates meet and ranks first as the country where you are most likely to experience a natural disaster. The United States has been tectonically active since the supercontinent Pangea broke up around 200 million years ago. The San Andreas Faultline forms the tectonic boundary between the North American and Pacific plates, and the release of pressure along this line leads to earthquakes across the western region of the US. Meanwhile, the United Kingdom ranks in 64th place, a safe haven away from much of the world’s environmental havoc.

The following table reveals the top 10 countries you are most likely to experience a natural disaster:

    Further Findings:

    • The UK has no risk of tsunamis but a marginal risk of experiencing an earthquake.
    • Mexico is by far the most deadly country on earth when it comes to lightning strikes, with 19% of all lightning-related deaths.
    • China ranks ahead of Indonesia for the odds of experiencing an earthquake, but there is a comparatively small risk of experiencing a tsunami.
    • Japan ranks in third place overall, with 11.7% of the world’s tsunamis.
    • South Africa ranks third for deaths caused by lightning, with 12.8% of total lightning casualties worldwide.
    • New Zealand ranks eighth overallbut sixth for tsunamis, with 7.1%.
    • Australia ranks 46th, ahead of the UK in 64th place. Unlike the UK, Australia has deaths due to lightning and a greater risk of experiencing an earthquake.
    • There have been three times more deaths due to lightning in South Africa than in the United States.
