The rupee today pared its initial gains and settled six paise lower at Rs. 74 and 82 paise against the US dollar.
The domestic unit weakened even as the domestic equity market traded in the positive territory.
The dollar index, which measures strength of the US currency against a basket of six currencies, fell 0.04 per cent to 92.23.
