    Published on November 24, 2023

Smiling Tree, a leading environmental organization, partnered with the District Institute of Education and Training, Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, to hold a ‘Reusing Plastic Bottles Workshop’, on 23 November, 2023. Dr. Mukesh Kwatra, founder of Smiling Tree, spearheaded and conducted the event, engaging nearly 150 enthusiastic teachers in exploring innovative ways to repurpose plastic bottles.

The workshop, held at the DIET campus in Old Rajinder Nagar, Delhi, aimed to empower educators with practical knowledge on sustainable practices, specifically focusing on creative methods to reuse plastic bottles. Dr. Kwatra showcased various techniques, transforming discarded plastic bottles into functional and aesthetically pleasing items. Among the highlighted projects were the conversion of plastic bottles into planters of diverse designs, the creation of vertical gardens utilizing recycled bottles, and the introduction of Ecobricks as an eco-friendly building solution.

Dr Kwatra elaborated the audience about the concept of Ecobricks. He said that “Ecobricks are a sustainable building block made by compacting clean and dry plastic waste into a plastic bottle. The bottles are tightly filled with plastic waste, typically single-use plastics like bags, wrappers, and packaging material, until they become dense and strong enough to be used as a construction material. This process allows for the proper disposal and upcycling of plastic waste by converting it into a useful commodity. Ecobricks offer an innovative and sustainable solution to plastic waste management while promoting environmental consciousness and supporting community development.”

Dr. Anamika Singh, of District Institute of Education and Training, expressed her appreciation for the initiative. “In our commitment to fostering environmental responsibility, this workshop serves as a pivotal step. Educators play a crucial role in shaping the future, and initiatives like these by Dr Kwatra provide them with valuable tools to instill eco-consciousness in the next generation.”

The participants were captivated by the hands-on demonstrations and insightful discussions, gaining a deeper understanding of the environmental impact of plastic waste. Dr. Kwatra emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in addressing environmental challenges, stating, “Through simple yet effective practices, we can make a significant impact. Repurposing plastic bottles not only reduces waste but also contributes to the creation of a greener and more sustainable future.”
