  • South African Consulate-General and Happy Home & School for the Blind celebrate Nelson Mandela Day

    “What could have been a better way to celebrate the great visionary’s birthday who spent most of his life in darkness to give light to South Africa” said Pule Malefane, Mumbai Consul General, Republic of South Africa on the occasion of South Africa’s cultural icon Nelson Mandela’s 94th Birthday, which has been declared as International Nelson Mandela Day by the United Nations in 2009. The celebrations took place along with the children from the Happy Home & School for the Blind at Worli in Mumbai, who enjoyed in the revelries and joined the spirit of freedom embodied by Mandela. The event was supported by Standard Chartered Bank, The Oberoi Group of Hotels and Sofitel Hotels.

    The Nelson Mandela Day is celebrated by people across the world to commemorate the 67 years of struggle suffered by Mandela to abolish apartheid and create a free South Africa. The celebrations at the School consisted mainly of heartwarming musical performances by the visually impaired children of the School and the guests were entertained by exhilarating performance from Drum Café. The festivities ended with cake cutting ceremony to join the whole world in wishing Nelson Mandela, a very Happy Birthday.
