Seven hundred U.S. federal agents were involved in a major swoop on the Mafia on Thursday morning when they rounded up 127 people allegedly involved in organized crime in the north-east United States.

Described by Attorney General Eric Holder as the largest single-day mob crackdown in the history of the FBI, the operation snared alleged leaders of all 5 of the leading crime families in New York City, including the entire leadership of the Colombo family not already in prison. Additionally, the arrests extended to the Gambino, Genovese, Lucchese, Bonanno families, along with members of the New Jersery-based DeCavalcante family and New England Mafia.

The arrests took place at dawn Thursday, primarily in New York City, and other North Coast cities in New Jersey, and Rhode Island, FBI officials said. The 127 suspects are now facing charges of murder, drug trafficking, arson, loan sharking, illegal gambling, witness tampering, labor racketeering, and extortion.
