A 20-year old college student was reportedly gang-raped and murdered at Modaga near Sulebavi village in Belgaum Taluk on Friday night.

She was returning to her village Modaga from Belgaum where she was studying. She appeared for her exams on Friday but did not return home.

The murder was discovered on Saturday after the owner of a nearby field found the body of the girl and informed the police.

Belgaum Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil informed that three investigating teams have been formed to nab the culprits.

Hundreds of residents of Modaga and college students blocked the road near the village bus stand.

This is the second gang rape and murder of a college student in Belgaum District in the past three months.

Another student was gang-raped and killed in Athani in January.

Expressing grief on the tragic incident Congress leader Manish Tewari said that such crimes against women portrays the actual governance of the state.
