  • Alistair Pereira sent to Arthur Road Jail

    Published on January 20, 2012

Alistair Pereira was today sent to Arthur Road Jail in Central Mumbai almost a week after the Supreme Court upheld his conviction for running over seven persons in 2006. Earlier this morning, Pereira surrendered before the Sewri Court, which had tried him and completed all the formalities.

Earlier, this week the 27- year-old was sent back home as a certified copy of the apex court order was not received either by the police or the Sessions Court.

Last week, the apex court had observed that the punishment for the dreadful offence was too meagre, but added that the sentence could not be enhanced as Maharashtra Government had not filed an appeal challenging the jail term.

The Supreme Court had cancelled the Pereira’s bail and asked him to forthwith surrender for undergoing the remaining sentence as awarded by the High Court in 2007.
