Kerry Hasina KhaledaUS Secretary of State John Kerry has written letters to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Opposition BNP leader Khaleda Zia urging them to immediately have a dialogue to end the current deadlock over poll time administration. The letter comes barely a fortnight after the UN Chief telephoned both the leaders and asked them to have a constructive dialogue to ensure a fair, free and inclusive elections in Bangladesh.

Diplomatic corps of different nations including the US, EU and China have been calling for a dialogue between the two parties to break the impasse.

They have also been meeting the Election Commission with offers for technical help in conducting the elections. The 15th amendment of the constitution has scrapped the caretaker government for conducting polls.

Ruling Awami League says that polls will be held as per the constitution under the leadership of the current government, but Opposition BNP insists on again amending the constitution to bring back neutral caretaker administration for conducting the polls. The tenure of the current Parliament ends on January 24th 2014, and as per the constitution, polls should be held within the last 90 days of the tenure of the Parliament.
