  • Credit Suisse Supertrends: a compass for investors as overall conviction remains strong

    Published on May 9, 2023

India :  Higher inflation, increasing interest rates, recession fears, geopolitical challenges, as well as the energy crisis, made 2022 a very challenging year for global financial markets. While Credit Suisse’s Supertrends were also impacted by the downtrend, our diversification approach across all six Supertrends and their various subthemes helped navigate the turbulent markets.

Six years after launch, the Supertrends continue to focus on long-term and multi-year societal trends that should lead to fast-growing business opportunities and therefore remain highly relevant. As a result, our long-term overall conviction across all Supertrends remains strong.

Burkhard Varnholt, Global Chief Investment Officer at Credit Suisse, said: “While the Supertrends could not escape the downtrend in financial markets in 2022, we retain our overall conviction across the Supertrends and their subthemes. We believe the Supertrends continue to offer value in terms of diversification and growth opportunities by focusing on themes that transcend business cycles and will ultimately shape the future.”

“The 2020s have already ushered in a lot of changes in our world, many of which we have captured in our Supertrends long-term equity investment themes. While these trends were just starting to emerge when we first launched the Supertrends in 2017, they are now growing and evolving into something much more impactful,” said Nannette Hechler-Fayd’herbe, Head of Global Economics and Research at Credit Suisse.

John Woods, Chief Investment Officer Asia Pacific at Credit Suisse, said: “We continue to develop our Supertrends framework; and this year are introducing “Metals of the Future” as part of our climate change sub-theme. Moreover, we re-fresh and update existing strategies; for example, by embedding topical developments such as AI-driven chatbots and luxury demand in Asia Pacific in our existing investment trends and themes.”
